Meyer Memorial Trust Awards $750,000 for Cascadia’s Garlington Center Project
— Funds will support building a new integrated behavioral healthcare clinic and 50+ affordable apartments for Northeast Portland –
A center offering innovative, holistic care and housing for people in need is one step closer, thanks to Meyer Memorial Trust’s (MMT) award totaling $750,000 for Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare’s new integrated clinic at Garlington Center.
The MMT funding support includes a two-year $250,000 grant and program-related investment (PRI) of $500,000 to support the renovation and redevelopment of this important community resource. The MMT funds are conditional on the project receiving further funding support in spring of 2016.
“We are striving to create a valued space where being mindful and treating the whole body is easy and accessible for our community, and where living in a central neighborhood is affordable for everyone,” said Dr. Derald Walker, President and CEO, Cascadia Behavioral Healthcare. “This award is incredibly helpful for setting the course on this project.”
When complete, the new Garlington Center will provide integrated affordable housing, behavioral health services and a neighborhood wellness center for a wide range of individuals. Including:
- More than 50 new apartments for low-income, qualifying individuals (a portion set aside for each: people with incomes at or below area median income (<60% AMI), people with a serious mental illness and homeless veterans).
- Mental health & addiction services, integrated with a medical team on site – providing collaborative health opportunities, especially for those experiencing chronic conditions such as diabetes or hypertension. (More on Integrated Care Clinic)
- Wellness center resources accessible to residents, clients and to the greater community – such as a garden space, meeting rooms and health and wellness education.
Cascadia’s Garlington Center campus (nearly 1.5 acres) is located in the Eliot Neighborhood and in the heart of the historic Albina district at 3034 NE Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard in Portland. The center is named in honor of the late Rev. Dr. John W. Garlington Jr, a prominent African American activist in Portland during the late 1970s and early 1980s. (More on Garlington Center)
